
INFLUENCE OF KNOWLEDGE OF MATHEMATICS POSSESSED BY SENOIR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS ON THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN PHYSICS IN OGBOMOSO SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

This research work was carried out to investigate the influence of knowledge of Mathematics possessed by Senior Secondary School Students on their Academic Performance in Physics in Ogbomoso South Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. Influence of students’ gender on their academic achievement in Physics based on the knowledge of Mathematics the Students possessed was specifically investigated. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. Two research questions were answered and two hypotheses were also tested. The population comprised of all the Senior Secondary School Two Physics Students (SS2) in the study area. A total of Two hundred (200) Physics Students were sampled for the study which comprised of one hundred and seventeen (117) male and eighty three (83) female. Two research hypotheses were formulated and tested. Students Achievement Test in Mathematics (SATM) and Students Achievement Test in Physics (SATP) were the instruments for the study. The two instruments were validated. Using test retest method, reliability index of 0.71 and 0.75 were obtained, respectively. The data collected were analyzed using ANOVA. The result indicated that there was a significant influence of the knowledge of Mathematics possessed by senior Secondary School Students on their academic performance in Physics. Also, Students’ gender has influence on their academic performance in Physics based on the knowledge of Mathematics the Students possessed. It was recommended among others that Mathematics teachers should teach Students with zeal and use strategies that will develop Students’ interest in the subject.

Dr. David Akinjide Akintola is a senior lecturer and researcher at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Ibadan Study Centre, Oyo State. His academic interests span science education, educational measurement and evaluation, and curriculum studies. He has contributed extensively to research on student academic performance and pedagogical approaches in Physics and Mathematics education at the secondary school level.
Dr. Maryam Titilayo Na’Allah is a faculty member in the Chemistry Education Department at the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. Her research interests include science teaching methodology, curriculum innovation, and the integration of gender equity in science education. She is known for her work in advancing teacher training and promoting female participation in STEM disciplines.
Mr. Kehinde Adeagbo Adeleke is an educator and programme facilitator at the National Teachers’ Institute, LAUTECH Centre, Ogbomoso, Oyo State. He specializes in teacher development and secondary science education, with a focus on improving instructional delivery in Physics and Mathematics among public school teachers.
Mr. Gabriel Olawumi Ayanlola is an academic staff member at the National Teachers’ Institute, LAUTECH Centre, Ogbomoso, Oyo State. His professional focus lies in curriculum implementation and student-centered learning strategies. He is engaged in field-based teacher mentoring and promoting innovative assessment techniques in science education.
