The study investigates the effects of principals’ leadership styles on teachers’ attitudes to work in secondary schools within Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria. This study is premised on the rationale that the principal’s approach to leadership significantly influences teacher motivation, commitment, and overall job
satisfaction, which are critical determinants of educational success. A descriptive research design was employed, with a population comprising all secondary school teachers actively working in the local government area. A sample of 150 teachers was selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire containing 30 questions on leadership styles (autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire) and teacher effectiveness, measured on a five-point Likert scale. The reliability of the instrument was confirmed with a Cronbach’s alpha score of 0.74. The study revealed significant variations in teachers’ attitudes to work based on principals’ leadership styles. Democratic leadership was found to positively influence teachers’ motivation and commitment, while autocratic leadership was associated with mixed responses. Laissez-faire leadership showed minimal impact, often
correlating with reduced teacher effectiveness. Given this, the study recommends that principals adopt a democratic leadership style to foster collaboration, motivation, and job satisfaction among teachers. Training programs and workshops on effective leadership for school administrators are suggested to enhance their managerial capabilities and promote a conducive work environment for educators.
